On 25 April Italy celebrates the Liberation Day, Festa della Liberazione, which commemorates the general insurrection in 1945 by the Italian Resistance Movement, and the end of Benito Mussolini’s regime and Nazi occupation, at the end of World War II.
Is a day of holiday across Italy: schools and offices are closed as well as many shops. The main commemorative events for the occasion are centered in Rome.
Procession of the ANPI (Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d’Italia – Italian Partisans National Association): At 09.30 about 3, 000 people are expected to march from Piazza del Coliseum to Piazza Porta S. Paolo.
Ceremony for the Unknown Soldier, at 9.30 AM in Piazza Venezia: there will be the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, and the Ministry of Defense. In the Plaza, the monument of the Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: the anonymity of the entombed soldier is the key symbolism of the monument, because it could be the tomb of anyone who fell in service of the nation, symbolizing all of the sacrifices.
Cyclist race: Gran Premio Ciclistico della Liberazione. The main race begins at Viale Terme di Caracalla, at 10.00 AM, for cyclists in the under 23 category. Over 170 Italian cyclists, as well as cyclists from the national teams of Australia, Russia, Slovenia, Japan and Ukraine, are involved in the annual race. Before this race there will also be a race for 25 amateur cyclists, and then a new tourist cycle-walk around Caracalla.
There are a number of other cycling events and processions in the morning. At 10.00 the Federazione Italiana Amici della Bicicletta (Friends of the bicycle Italian Federation) organized the Resistere-Pedalare-Resistere (resist-ride-resist), a 25-km cycle, comprising the locations most associated with the liberation movement in Rome. The Unione Italiana Sport Per Tutti (Sport for Everyone Italian Union) organized the Pedalata Partigiana (Partisan cycle), from Piazza Persiani-Nuccitelli. From Centocelle, at 9.30 from Piazza delle Camelie to via Ettore Giovenale, begins a procession to celebrate and to demonstrate for the creation of a public park in Rome.
Pigneto, Quartiere in Festa: In the Pigneto district, celebrations are spread out over two days, beginning on the evening of Wednesday 24 April and lasting until late on 25 April. The 12th edition includes music, cinema, theatre, literature and sport.
During the day most of the museums and exhibits, as is for the Coliseum and Castel Sant’Angelo, will be open.
Could be intersting also the presence of many sagre paesane (country festival or fair), near Rome, like the Sagra della Pizza fritta (Festival of the Fried Pizza) in Arsoli, and the Sagra dell’Asparago (Festival of the asparagus) in Montopoli di Sabina and in Canino.
